Found Jesus, Plead Guilty, Thought About Growing Up, Vick What Are You Going to Do Next Week?

Well Vick certainly isn’t going to be going to Disney World anytime soon!
I watched the brief spectacle of the procedure today and the press announcement in a local hotel ball room. For many of the people that have responded that Vick is not important and we should be focusing as Americans on more important things, you will be happy to know that I was much more interested (and happy) about the resignation of Alberto Gonzales.
That said, this blog is not about a corrupt and inept Bush Administration and is about a corrupt and inept Michael Vick.
Michael Vick Vicked Himself
Vicked. Verb 1) to perform a self destructive act. 2) to throw away your fortune and every chance at a fortune 3) to rise out of poverty and squalor to the height of success, fame and fortune and then throw it away doing something that is repugnant to the people that funded your success 4) to earn almost a quarter of a billion dollars and piss it away on dog fighting Slang 1) Screwing yourself in a way that is not pleasurable
Examples in Use (According to Webber’s)
1) He really vicked himself over.
2) I’ve never seen someone vick themselves up that bad since that crazy dog killing quarterback (What was his name?) Vicked himself up all those years ago, Damn what was his name. That dude was really vicked up!
3) Some people thought that Michael Jackson vicked himself up before he moved to Bahrain, but that was nothing compared to how vicked up he was after sleeping with that Sultan’s twin little boys with Osama Bin Laden and Rush Limbaugh.
4) Some people thought that Bill Clinton Vicked himself over pretty good when he was President, but everyone agreed that Hillary vicked herself over one better when it was discovered that she had an affair with President Putin in the Lincoln bedroom, while Bill was bound and gagged and forced to watch in the corner. People just never got over liking Bill and disliking Hillary, but that was the straw that broke the camel’s back and instigated WWIII and pre-empted the World Wide Empire of China.
Seriously
Michael Vick may have written those words today himself, but he was still following the direction of his attorneys. I’m sure Michael Vick felt a little better after saying those words as he has been under a self imposed gag order since he started spouting lies on Radio and to the NFL commissioner and the owner of the Falcons.
Among other things, Michael Vick admitted he was a big fat lier today. That was really no surprise to anyone with the exception of a few stalwart fans that refuse to see the reality . . .
And the reality is that Michael Vick was laying the ground work for future reconciliations with the NFL and with the public. The speech will not likely do him much good when it comes to sentencing as his apology did not cover gambling or killing or injuring dogs, but instead apologized for being immature and telling untruths. Legally and contractually, he is still bound up and can not tell the truth in an apology as it could jeopardize his attempts to come back to the NFL someday.
Vick will be sentenced on December 10th. He will probably stay out of the public eye as much as possible until then. He was ordered to pay for the care of his 50+ dogs. The judge today was in fine form when he made this order and I thought that it spoke well of the very small ability of blind justice to take a small baby step in the right direction of things after the fact for the dogs in this case that have survived so far. Unless Vick gets another seat belt ticket or is charged in State Court, which is unlikely, he’ll probably remain hidden for several months in my opinion.
Vick’s Real Potential
Now, personally, I do not believe that Vick found Jesus or religion recently. Maybe I’m too inoculated to the false pretensions of religion that spew from a White House that claims to be religious yet does so many things that go against religions (take your pick and name one) that it is obvious that they just say these things to appease their base. Its not surprising that many people that used to consider themselves part of the Conservative Christian Coalition are waking up and realizing that they have just been taken for a ride. Politics and religion do not make good bed fellows, because primarily, there are politicians involved. That means that one party to the bedding is going to lie to other and take advantage of them and usually that means the politician is the one that tells the lie and takes advantage.
So with that political background, I find Vick’s finding of Jesus hollow at best and pandering at worst. Obviously, Vick never stopped to ask or consider “What would Jesus Do?” while he and his cohorts were killing, strangling, electrocuting and slamming dogs to their death. I can’t prove that Jesus existed. I can’t prove that Jesus was even a good person. I can’t prove that Jesus was anyone’s savior. However, I would be willing to wager (and I don’t like to wager much at all) that Jesus did not like to kill or torture dogs.
Finding Jesus when you are in trouble is a cliche that is almost as old as the Bible.
Vick actually hinted at his real potential today. He talked about the fact that for most of his life he has always been a football player. He did some wonderful things as a football player in college and showed a little potential in the NFL. He never achieved that potential in the NFL and this website feels that he should not get a second chance at the NFL, not because we harbor a grudge against Vick, but because the NFL does not need Vick or someone like Vick that has done what Vick has done.
Make no mistake. I think that Vick can be redeemed and I think today, he showed a little of that potential that made many fans including myself expect great things out of him as a football player.
Michael Vick can redeem himself. He can do this by changing his life around, ‘growing up’ and ‘Doing’ good things. Unless he is a complete psychopath (given the dog torture it is a possibility, we all know that people that torture dogs have a tendency for being psychopaths), Vick seemed sincere today and he seemed sincere in understanding that he had done some pretty heinous things through his own actions or inactions (even though he did not voice those things nor apologize for the worst of them).
If he truly can tell the difference between right and wrong, then there is hope for the guy. I do not know if a dog killer can be reformed. People that comment on this blog often talk about what crimes or worse than others. Killing dogs may not be as bad as raping or killing a child (I was very moved by the father in Florida that talked at length following the death sentence of his daughters rapist and killer), but killing dogs is bad. As a society we have the perception that child rapists can not be reformed that once they are a child predator, they will always be considered a predator or potential predator. I suspect that someone that engaged in the practices that Vick did for the last 5 years is possibly beyond reform. Once an addict always an addict.
Maybe Vick can control or manage his desires, let’s hope.
But if he does know the difference between right and wrong and he can either be reformed or control himself, I think he could channel his charisma, his remaining fortune and his former fame and current notoriety into something positive. I think he should consider something that takes him out of the football limelight. It almost destroyed him or he vicked himself after all. He should focus on something that helps people, gives back to communities, and maybe helps the disadvantaged.
He has the potential to do a lot of good things. There is no law saying that he has to redeem himself to society. He has broken his social contract, burned it up, and buried the ashes. He could start over, start fresh, start new and invent a Michael Vick (did disturb me that he talked about himself in the third person during the news conference, was he trying to work on the Michael Vick brand or apologize for his own failings or is he psychotic after all and in partial control of a split personality, or maybe he is still surrounded by too many sycophants) that does good things, builds things up instead of tearing them down, helps people instead of spreading hurt through dog torture and illegal gambling, and shows kids how to live a good life.
He could be a role model for showing kids how to achieve great things with their lives instead of being a role model to kids, showing them how to get out of a great amount of trouble when you make a great big mistake.

Jamal,
Thanks for adding that link. I definitely agree that more attention needs to be focused on spousal abuse in sports and in the NFL in particular.
Its unfortunate that the Vick situation has received more attention for due to the gruesome nature of Vick’s crimes, but hopefully some of this attention on Vick will help raise general awareness of other issues in the NFL including spousal abuse.
Provided that he is sentenced to a real prison, I hope that he finds himself on the wrong end of a few different strange Vicks.
I’ve always heard that he was a dumbass, but this is baffling.
100% agree! I can’t believe people are saying, “Well he’s contrite so he deserves a second chance.”
In my view what you’ll do to a dog you’ll do to a person (but not vice-versa thank God–that would be sick).
