Could the Vick Dog fighting Scandal turn into a Murder Mystery?
That’s what North Carolina investigators are attempting to discover. Eight days before federal investigators raided Michael Vick’s home on April 25, Roy Thomas “Bud” Melton was found shot to death in his North Carolina mobile home.
Roy Thomas ‘Bud’ Melton
Age: 38
Date of death: April 17, 2007
Where he was found: A friend found Melton shot to death in his home on Little Mountain Road on the outskirts of Sherrills Ford. He had been dead for several hours before the discovery of his body.
Details: Few details are available about the death of Roy Melton. There were no signs of forced entry or anything missing from the home. Investigators also seized 30 pit bulls from Melton’s property. They believed the dogs were used in dog fighting. However, investigators aren’t sure if the dog fighting is related to Melton’s death.
Anyone with information should call Investigator Aaron Turk at 465-8348.
The Vick / Bad News Kennel Connection to Bud Melton
Investigators in North Carolina Catawba County are now releasing information that shows links to Michael Vick’s Bad News Kennel and provides meticulous records of dogs that were fought in North Carolina.
The Michael Vick indictment made multiple references to dog fights in North Carolina but no individuals were mentioned. Melton’s records also show that some of the dogs raised by Melton may have ended up at Bad News Kennel. This appears to be the first public release of names involved, and the named person is a murder victim.
Investigating Vick in relation to Murder?
Investigators stress that right now, they don’t have any evidence linking Vick’s operation with Melton’s murder but they are looking into that possibility.
Question for Commissioner Goodell: If Vick is Linked to this Murder is that serious enough for a permanent NFL ban?
Well, Commissioner, just where do you draw the line?
Follow the Money
Let’s consider motive for just a second. Michael Vick had a $1-200 million empire on the line. If he thought that that empire were at risk or if some of his buddies (that have proved their loyalty) thought the gravy train were about to derail, is it really so crazy to think that they might commit murder to cover things up?
People have killed people for far less than what Michael Vick was trying to protect. In the early days, people thought that there might just be some smoke when they first raided Vick’s compound.
That led to Vick’s plea agreement. So there was a fire there.
But what if the fire was actually a lot larger and hotter than anyone ever conceived. We are talking about a number of people involved in a number of illegal activities. Many people have argued that Vick was just killing dogs and that dogs are not that important, and that after all Vick didn’t kill an actual person and that no people were harmed by what Vick did.
Well, it would now appear that Bud Melton might argue those premises, if he had not been murdered.

No one knows what happened. The only thing we have is mere speculation. Allow me.
Before becoming Michael Vick the football player Michael Vick was the individual who came from a town in Virginia. He was a country boy/man. He was given large sums of money and expected to perform. That’s a lot of pressure. That is a heavy weight for anyone to carry. Let’s go to the dog fighting. I gather Vick has been involved in this activity since he was a child. At the time he began this activity he saw nothing wrong with it because others were also doing it. Moving further along. He prchased the Kenel. His friends actually ran the operation. He merely provided the funding.
From what I gather Vick is an intelligent individual. Maybe Vick wants to become once again Michael Vick the individual and not Michael Vick the football player. He has continued to emphasize that he wanted to put Michael Vick together rather than Michael Vick the football player. Those from his hometown know a different Michael Vick. They know MIchael Vick the individual and not Michael Vick the football player. The two are not the same. If we truly want to know the real Michael Vick the individual, we must go to his hometown and talk to those who knew and know him. Those who knew him in Atlanta often said he was rather quiet and kept to himelf. He would rather play a video game than hang out. I was surprised to learn he was a devoted father. That did not go along with the persona. We all knew he was devoted to his family. He had been projected as someone who was irresponsible and did not provide for his children. Someone might ask, what is the point of it all. The point is this whole situation might provide an opportunity for the Michael Vick the individual to come forth and not Michael Vick the football player. He has continued to emphasize his desire for Michael Vick to come forth and not Michael Vick the football player. It is as though he was tired of being Michael Vick the football player whom everyone expected to perform on the football field as well as off the football field. Some might say that is a big price to pay, but being a star and always expected to perform can be a burden. Sometimes the cost of freedom can be rather expensive. If we are going to speculate then lets consider everything. There are many sides to a story. The essence of the matter is only Michael Vick knows why he did what he did.
Hypocrites,
you mention 2 things that I’d like to respond to above.
I have read nothing that indicates this is true. If it is true, then I would suggest that it is extremely disturbing. I grew up myself in a small town in Illinois. Dog fighting was not a part of small town life where I lived.
There were occasionally kids and teenagers that did torture or kill animals. I distinctly recall two teenagers that set a cat on fire (I was about 8 and they were about 16.) That behavior was not condoned. Those kids were watched by their parents, and disciplined by their parents and the authorities. To my knowledge they did not continue burning cats as they advanced into adulthood and their mid twenties.
If Michael Vick engaged in dog fighting as a child and his parents did not know nor stop it, then I would suggest that they failed Michael Vick. I am a parent and I know how difficult it is to succeed with your children. I do not cast judgment on Vick’s parents in this regard, but it is a failure none the less.
It does not however make it OK, for Vick to continue torturing and killing dogs after he turned 18, nor when he advanced to the even more adult age of 26.
When a person’s parents fail to educate them, it becomes the responsibility of the individual to educate themselves as to the rules of society and in this regard, Michael Vick failed to educate himself. His failure has led him to a point where he has lost his personal freedom, while the federal government spends my tax dollars to help him get re-educated and and rehabilitated so that he can hopefully learn the lesson that the majority of children DID learn in childhood.
Now, I live by modest means these days, and it offends me that someone who is still worth tens of millions of dollars is now living on my tax dollars. However, I do feel that it is a small price to pay to hopefully help this person learn from their mistakes and re-enter society some day hopefully reformed and hopefully living in society in a way that is not dangerous to those around him.

regarding the pressure of the NFL and success.
Well, yes there are a lot of pressures.
So What?
There are many people in the world that have far more difficult pressures than those of Michael Vick. Look at the young children and teenagers of Africa that are forced into the military, forced to take drugs and then slaughter, rape and kill their own people so that blood diamonds can be exported in exchange for money for guns to do more of the same. Look at the people in Darfur being tortured and killed and held in the middle of no where under terrible conditions.
I feel sorry for them and their plight.
I do not feel sorry for Michael Vick’s plight and the pressure he was under.
He could have resigned from the NFL any day of the week and ended that pressure. Yes, there would have been financial and legal implications of that, but if that’s what it took for him to be a normal person and not torture and kill animals then that is what it takes.
He should have done what was right and he often chose not to do that and as this article points out, a person was murdered as a consequence of the dog fighting rings and business that Michael Vick was engaged in.
It is important to understand how this came about, so that as a society and a people we can learn from it and avoid these mistakes. But understanding how it came about is not a substitute for responsibility. Understanding how Michael Vick grew up to commit these acts despite having more benefits and money than 99.9% of the people in the world will ever have or see, does not require our forgiveness.
I forgive Michael Vick for what he did out of the charity of my heart not out of the obligation of a society that owes it to a kid that grew up poor in a small town.
I grew up poor in a small town. Michael Vick and I were equals then and we are equals now, and we are both accountable for our actions.
I did not have nor work for the physical gifts that Michael Vick has. I did not rest on my rear end either. I enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 and went to Basic Training the day the ground war started in the first Persian Gulf War.
I take full responsibility for my success and failure and am constantly working to improve myself and do better.
If Michael Vick can be half as successful as I was at self improvement, then I will be proud to consider him a fellow human being. If he gives up due to the pressures of the world, and stays home playing video games only to break from time to time to torture something, I will have no sympathy for him.
