DogTime

I just recently caught up with an old friend of mine who runs a website and company called DogTime.  DogTime focuses on helping people find the right dog, take care of their dogs, and much much more.  image

Headquartered in San Francisco, our collective experience includes years of raising dogs, writing about dogs, rescuing dogs, training dogs, walking dogs, falling in love with and having our hearts broken by dogs. With DogTime, our mission is to keep dogs out of shelters and in good homes by equipping novice and experienced owners alike with all the information needed to make them, and their dogs, very happy.

Here you can find your dream canine companion with our one-of-a-kind matchmaking service, and then get expert answers for his every age, stage, and four-legged phase. Coming soon will be online training classes offered by experts Ian and Kelly Dunbar, a dog adoption center, and the chance to connect with fellow dog people and swap videos, advice, and local information on great parks, boarding options, and vets, among other things.

I came across this site actually following a video showing one of Michael Vick’s Dogs.  It had been saved and ‘rehabilitated’.  The dog still had lots of scars, but was happy and safe and loving today.  It was a little affirming to find a site run by an old friend that had happened upon some commonality in helping dogs and people live together happily.  :)

Its funny how you can just be on the bandwagon…pitbulls are the worst dogs…one pitbull attacked a friend of mine…and one pitbull almost attacked me, when I was younger. I can’t believe you have the nerve to try and save those breed of dogs…it really upsets me and it hurts that you don’t even care…pitbull attacks occur every year and it’s a shame that people take better care of those dogs than any other…clearly this world is messed up!

    • Doll, I do empathize with you. A neighbors pitbull attacked one of our dogs last month. Twenty years ago 2 pitbulls that escaped from their house, attacked a collie I owned at the time and almost killed him.

Comparatively, I’ve owned a pitbull that was far better trained, and never attacked anyone. My brother has owned several and they were some of the smartest dogs I’ve ever seen.

I think you may have more of an issue with Michael Vick than most people because he used his own money and resources for 6 years while he was in the NFL to train Pitbulls to fight, to cause harm(to save their own lives), he taught them fear and terror and killed any dogs (by hand) that didn’t exhibit those traits.

Michael Vicks sick animal husbandry and massive financial efforts have gone a long way towards putting more people like yourself and others at risk.

Michael Vick and sick people like him have made some pitbulls much more dangerous, but many of the groups that went in and saved many of his dogs have also shown that these dogs can be trained and taught not to cause harm.

On a different note, I jog a great deal. Two months ago I was jogging down the street and ‘attacked’ bitten on the ankle by a schnauzer then a block later, ‘attacked’ and bitten on the side by a very large german shepard.

In both cases the dogs were defending their territory, but they were not well trained and didn’t realize that their yard/territory did not extend into the street. Now, just because I’ve had the experience of being ‘attacked’ does not mean that I think all schnauzers should be put down (even though I’ve heard of many many schnauzer attacks on people) and it doesn’t mean that all german shepards should be ended either.

It means that if an untrained dog is put in a position where they feel they need to defend, they might just defend even if that means biting.

These were very minor examples, and I do recognize there is a vastly different degree of a problem between a bite or three and a dog mauling (which was more the case when two pitbulls attacked my collie.

Regardless, often the blame lies more with the owner than with the dog. In many jurisdictions the owner is responsible for their animals if they attack, and one of the best ways to prevent an animal from attacking is to train them and care for them.

Michael Vick did just the opposite to an extraordinarily sick and twisted degree.
