Michael Vick’s Abused Dogs on Dr Phil – Voice Your Opinion!

Michael Vick’s dogs will be receiving some media attention today, helping to focus the spotlight on some of the victims of his crimes as opposed to shining the glory of the lights on the criminal as has been done all summer long by most news and media outlets.

imageDr Phil’s looking for feedback – Should Michael Vick have been reinstated?

“Do you live in the Philadelphia area?  Do you feel that Michael Vick should have been reinstated to the NFL? Yes or No?  Why do you feel this way?  If you think Michael Vick deserves a second chance to play professional football, please let us know, and give us your reasons why.”

If you want Dr Phil and his audience no how you feel about this situation, leave your comments here.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, some five million to seven million viewers of the popular “Dr. Phil” talk show will get a look at the Vicktory dogs at Best Friends Animal Society.

A segment of the show will be devoted to NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who recently suited up with the Philadelphia Eagles and returned to the football field after serving a 23-month sentence on a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge.

But more importantly, the segment will feature some of Vick’s victims — 22 of whom came to Best Friends in January 2008 to heal from the trauma they suffered at the hands of Vick and others in his dogfighting ring.

I'm a lover...

I’m a lover…

“What is important to us is that people consider the dogs,” says Ed Fritz, campaign specialist for ‘Pit Bulls: Saving America’s Dog,’ one of four Best Friends’ campaigns aimed at reaching the goal of No More Homeless Pets. “There’s a lot of talk about Michael Vick and if he deserves a second chance, but no one is talking about the dogs. Don’t these dogs deserve a second chance? As long as Vick is playing with the NFL, it’s up to us to support the victims of his cruelty. Michael Vick didn’t serve one day in prison for animal cruelty. He was punished for dogfighting conspiracy.”

Vick has apologized publicly, but many question his sincerity.

“To our knowledge, neither Vick, his handlers, nor the NFL has called to ask how the dogs are doing,” wrote Best Friends co-founder Francis Battista in a moving commentary in the Philadelphia Inquirer. “And these very real, living victims of the crime are nowhere to be found in the continuing debate about Vick’s rehabilitation.” Read the entire commentary here.

I am not a Dr. Phil viewer(& would not have known about this except for your website) but GOOD. As I talk to people & they learn the actual details (pulling out teeth with plyers for fun, wrapping dogs in chains & watching them drown, “acquiring” family pets for training & baiting, etc.) they realize this is not some ‘bad boy’ act that went a little too far, this is the behavior of an embryo serial killer.

I hope the show is truthful about that stats: the number of dogs that are known to have gone thru the kennel, how many fights per event, how many events per month. & as sad as the rescue cases are, these are the LUCKY animals.

    • Ga dog_lover:

i wish someone would account the bait animals(probably in the 1000s)he tortured from the age of 6 to 26 years of age. They shoud also account the bait animals he raised, beagles and kittens.

  • Ga dog_lover:

No, i do not feel he should have been reinstated for at least a year anyway. Getting out of prison should not be rewarded as some great accomplishment. This is the message the NFL sent to our kids. This is the message they continue to send. Being a bad boy in the NFL has already taken many lives that didn’t get that second chance in prisons, institutions and death for many years now by emulating the party life. Now being a bad boy means abusing animals is ok? They get no second chances. He drowned pitbulls in his pool! How barbaric can you get? He knocked out Georgia’s teeth with a hammer! Stop excusing him! This isn’t Southern culture. this is insanity!

  • Hunny&MitziesMom:

I just watched the Dr. Phil episode and it was refreshing to see that there are other people out there who feel that Vick should not have been reinstated. The one thing that bothered me was when the gentleman from the NAACP said it was a racial issue…I have to disagree. I am a black woman, a dog owner, a PA native, and a former Eagles fan. I even was a Vick fan when he was in Atlanta. This has never had anything to do with race. If a white janitor had been convicted of dog fighting and not shown any true remorse, I would be against him going right back into his profession as if he was just on vacation. It is time to stop making excuses and own up to what you have done. Vick can pay millions of dollars but it won’t make a difference if he cannot honestly feel some sort of remorse for the lives he has ended and/or ruined. I do believe in 2nd chances but you have to earn it. I would rather see Vick make amends by volunteering his time towards preventing animal cruelty before he is awarded the opportunity of making millions of dollars.

    • I think you make a good point Hunny&MitziesMom, its the ‘earning’ of the second chance that seems to be missing here.

I was in the Army for a number of years. Its not the same as prison, but definitely felt a lot like ‘doing time’. But the thing is, simply completing your time in the Army doesn’t make you an instant hero. Just like serving time in prison doesn’t pay back a debt to society nor show that you have earned a second chance.

Frankly, I’m just as appalled (but for different reasons) by Martha Stewart and her return after serving time for insider trading. Both examples of picking right back up where they left off committing crimes.

    • Ga dog_lover:

Thank you. there are a few african Americans from Atlanta who didn’t drink the Vick kool-aid. I am from Atlanta also. Terrence Moore from the AJC isn’t too fond of him either.

    • You are SO correct. I’m a White woman & animal lover, living in the South for over 30 years. Though dog fighting does exist in Black cultures there are more Black citizens that disapprove than there are that participate. My observations are based on conversations with my Black friends & neighbors on this subject. Also, in White Southern rural areas, there are not only dog fighting rings uncovered, but Cock- fighters, Pigs & other animal abuse taking place on a regular basis. These are usually hosted by persons referred to as “Red Necks”, being uneducated, white, Southerners, but persons from all walks of life have been caught participating. Actually, I think that historically, the Elite were hosts & participants of animal fights before they were illegal. Profiling these monsters only further excuse them, in my opinion. They exist & participate in all cultures.

  • tom arnold:

good ol’ dr. phil. forgot the guy still had a show.

  • My thoughts below are of the pre-trial Vick, which haven’t changed much.

He hasn’t “owned” his crime of torturing the fighters and the “bait” dogs, so how can he sincerely apologize for these brutal, pre-serial killer, acts? He only pled guilty to conspiracy charges, not animal torture. It makes me want to cry just remembering the sick details. I’ve yet to see him shed any real tears for the animals. Perhaps the ones he claims to have shed were for his own fall from grace & the loss of his material assets. Had his first efforts after being released from prison been aimed towards reaching out to animal welfare advocates, volunteering to clean kennels, making donations to aid the cause or anything related, I may have believed his intentions were honest. Instead, his goal was to get his foot into the NFL door & return to his own little sheltered world where his worth is determined by a scoreboard and a contract. The NFL needs to take a hard look at their standards & hold their players to a higher level of personal accountability, since many of them are heroes & role models for our future leaders, the youth of America.

    Who I’d like to meet:
Friends who are interested in Animal Welfare and anyone who is pleasant and has a good sense of humor. I would also like to meet anyone who joins my group, United We Stand or members of other groups with similar interests. Send me a message or add me as a friend! Together we can be the voice of the animals that are unable to defend themselves…………… I’d also like to meet Michael Vick,to educate him on the subject of dog fighting. First I’d chain him to a dog house, place a dish of his favorite food just inches from his big mouth & watch him choke as he tried to reach it. When he finally tired & gave up trying to reach the food, I’d place it near him. This would teach him that I was the “master” & if he planned to eat, then he’d better please me! I’d then introduce him to the “pit” as a contendor, to be sure that he understood what it took to survive in there. If he didn’t come out of the pit as “top dog” I might slam him on the ground a few times to let him know how disappointed I was with his performance. Assuming that thus far he’d survived, I’d chain him back up & instead of getting vet care for him, put some ointment on his open wounds. If he was lucky infection wouldn’t set in & he’d have no broken bones. I’d inform him that a fighter’s dog is useless if they are hurt & can’t perform, unless of course they are studs, which I’m sure that Vick is not! I’d also inform him that an injured dog without a pedigree could easily end up in a shallow grave. Finally, I’d leave him to rest & contemplate his lessons so he’d be prepared the next time he had to encounter me!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sweet dreams Michael! Be good & maybe the next time we meet instead of terrorizing you I’ll throw you a bone!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(I know this is satire & the best I can hope for is that he is sentenced to the maximum penalties that the law allows…but I really would like to meet him to let him know that he’s lucky he’s being tried by the judicial system & not by the animal lovers’ of the world!)

  • Dawnea:

Michael Vick “did his time” for Federal Racketeering, he served his prison sentence for Federal Racketeering – ONLY. The crimes, the heinous acts and crimes of Animal Cruelty – Michael Vick plead “Not Guilty”. The crimes in which, Michael Vick, systematically, prepared, planned, participated and executed, repeatedly, against these animals, was left unpunished in the legal justice system. This is a known public record of fact.
“He did his time, he paid for his crimes” – think again. “We all make mistakes”? – perhaps you will feel differently knowing that children are sporting dog masks to football games mocking the dead victims of his crimes. Laughing – joking – making fun – in support of their great idol with their parents right behind them screaming “To hell with Dogs – we love Vick”. If this would not lower your head in shame, then I fear for the monsters this has unleashed in division across this United States in support of this great American hero.
He has not and will not spend a single day behind bars for animal cruelty as his federal charges were for racketeering. And as for remorse, Vick pled NOT GUILTY to animal cruelty charges at his state trial – and it was dropped in a plea deal. How can this man be remorseful for his crimes if he does not even believe he was cruel to animals?
I’m not against second chances. I am against rewarding people who commit criminal acts by giving them million-dollar contracts. And that’s what the Eagles and the National Football League are doing.

    • Ga dog_lover:

I know this is true and that is what is sad. For those reading that support this man, I WILL call the police if I see your kids abusing animals anytime, anywhere. Just remember if you condone crime, you kids and you WIIL pay.

  • Fred:

Who cares?? LOL…Vick is back in the NFL and what happened to those threats of a boycott? LOL, his jersey is #4 on nfl.com, not much of a boycott now is it?

    • How big or small the boycott is, is the NFL’s problem not ours. As to Jersey sales, I wouldn’t put it past the NFL or Vick to go buy those Jersey’s themselves just to be able to say that they are #4 in sales.

book publishers do that crap all the time to get authors on the NYTimes best seller list. It would be a good PR move for the NFL or Michael Vick to do the same to attempt to fool people into thinking his public image and public acceptance was improving.

      • Ga dog_lover:

Every wanna-be thug in the USA bought the shirts. The day vick got reinstated, thugs wandered around downtown Atlanta with their kids. It makes me sick enough to see grown people act like this. But what is scary is these kids HEARD the
it’s only dogs”comments. Thus lies MORE future abuses.

    • tom arnold:

i agree fred, who cares. if mike vick is out killing dogs now then lets call the police. but last time checked he isn’t.

      • last time, no one checked for six years

        • tom arnold:

if mike vick is able to kill dogs now with everyone watching every move he makes, then he is a smart guy. But vick isnt that bright so aint happening.

          • so do you think he is smart enough to keep his urges developed over 6 years to kill and torture, under control now that he doesn’t have an outlet?

Glad I’m not in the same room with the guy

          • tom arnold:

maybe maybe not. But even if he makes an attempt to harm another animal he will stopped. See this is the postive of him playing in the NFL. If he decided to get an average job instead, he would be less relevant and have less incentive to not do bad things. And more people are now aware of animal cruelty as mike vick continues to become relevant. Again don’t approve of the man or his quick reinstatement, but honestly he does more help to society being an NFL player than being an average joe. And being an average joe would make him more likely to return to crime.

          • That is really silly and naive. Wonder why we didn’t make all excons famous in the first place when they get out of prison. ;)

The problem with your broken logic, is that even when Vick was under the spotlight as one of the highest paid players in the NFL, he was still able to do this stuff for 6 years.

He knows how to hide illegal behavior. He’s a master at it actually.

  • Ga dog_lover:

I love seeing all those street hustlers on bikes wearing no7 shirts. LMAO

  • Ga dog_lover:

Vick went back to Surry County Va.because he knew they would protect his “lifestyle”.

    • I wonder if the saying, ‘It pays to pay people off’ applies here.

-reduced jail time for vick compared to other people that have been busted recently for running massive dog fighting gambling rings, where the average jail time is closer to 20 years not 2
-no charges in VA at a state level
-got his job back at over a million per year

and lest we forget he withdrew close to $3m in cash that has never been accounted for before filing for bankruptcy

I doubt he used that $3m to buy cigarettes in prison

  • Corporate Exec:

Boycott the Eagles’ sponsors, and let ‘em know you’re boycotting them. It’ll work. Oh, and be civilized. People will join your protest if they like you.

  • Dogs were not the only thing killed here.My brother was “MURDERED” april 17 2007!!!!8 days before the raid of micheal vick’s compound there where more than dog’s KILLED…I was putting my brother to rest on april 25 while they was digging vick’s back yard.It has been made pretty clear here that vick and my brother was conected….My brother lived in North carolina and in visk’s inditment nc was listed 29 times.Someone or more went to my brothers home and filled him full of bullets and lift.Nothing was taken from my brothers home.Who ever done this went there to kill him and thats all.My brother did not let just anyone come to his home.My brother had to know his “MURDERER”.It look’s like some questions should have been answered that does not seem to be happening?????
Roy Thomas Bud Melton is my brother if anyone would like to look and read about it more.
    Sincerly,Maria

  • SHARON:

Michael Vick should not even be allowed to play football after his unforgivable acts of violence on dogs. He is suppose to be a role model for god sakes! I know my two boys will never consider this monster a role model in their lifetime. I would like to rent a football field for 1 hour, maybe even less and let loose a mountain lion and let him feel the fear these poor animals had. If he wins, he wins, if not oh well no loss to me!
