Nike – ‘A Contract with Michael Vick – wtf-LOL – No Not Us!’

image Nike found itself in the middle of a Media spin yesterday after Michael Vick’s agent announced that Michael Vick and Nike had signed a new contract.

“Mike has had a great relationship with Nike and is excited to be part of the Nike team again,” Joel Segal, an executive at the Best talent agency that represents Michael Vick, told The Sports Business Journal.

Nike has not previously signed deals with professional dog fighters (knowingly and after those dog fighters had served time in prison).  This deal seemed like a new milestone for a corporate giant not known for its work on social fronts.

But then Nike came out and stated they were just giving free product to Michael Vick.  This suddenly sounded less like a multimillion dollar endorsement deal and more like a micro sponsorship from a company that not only gives free products to professional sports stars, but also from time to time to you average person on the street, homeless person or even an ex-con trying to get back on their feet.  Nike HAS acknowledged that they gave Michael Vick some free product.  There seemed to be less contract ($$$) involved and more resume padding by Vick’s agent, who must have one of the worst jobs in the world.

image However, obviously, Nike is in need of some corporate soul searching (good luck with that effort, that’s an oxymoron if there ever was one).  But you can bet the Nike PR department is working over time to review policies about giving free products to just any old dog fighter turned pro foot ball player after getting out of prison and getting caught smoking marijuana while awaiting federal sentencing types.  Michael Vick, who represented Nike for years, not only killed dogs, but he made a laughing stock of the Nike swoosh and trademarked slogan ‘Just Do It’.  Michael Vick seemed to take his Nike sponsorhip and that slogan to heart for 6 years as he Just Did all types of illegal, violent and psychotic activities with his corporate endorsement and NFL money.

All in all this story feels like Michael Vick’s agent just jumped a small shark. But then again, corporate greed and Michael Vick’s moral retardation seems to know no bounds, so maybe they were all just testing the waters to see if they could get some mileage out of those dog fighter shoes one more time.

I think Nike planted this story to see what the reaction would be and that they have every intention of resuming their business relationship with him. How many fourth-string former felon quarterbacks do they give free products to?
I agree with this comment someone on philly.com posted:

“What Nike meant to say was ‘We at Nike do not formally have Michael Vick under contract – yet. While we look forward to making obscene amounts of money off the connection to Vick and his image among members of the Black community who disproportiately purchase our over-priced apparel, we do understand…that Vick is not a starting quarterback and has not scored a TD to this point…and that because rumor is he will only be in Philly through the end of the season, we want to be sure he’s traded to a team with a large urban population who will contend and give Nike lots of national exprosure…thus we at Nike have not offered Vick a contract to endorse our Third world, child labor sewn merchandise….yet”

    • I would tend to agree with that comment as well or to put it slightly differently, Nike might be looking at their future with Michael Vick, someone so bad, he almost makes Nike look good.

I guess they decided it wasn’t a good decision! I think they have to realize if “gansta lover”sales outweigh the rest of america’s sales. this wouldn’t have been a good move right before the holidays. we have had quite enough PR Vick.

  • Ya know, it would be a win/win relationship if MV and Nike teamed up to create Nike products to promote “ANTI ANIMAL ABUSE”.

If MV,…or Nike,…really cared about helping STOP ANIMAL abuse, this effort could help!

As it stands today,…we have lost our respect for the NFL,…will never buy anythiing of Nikes’,…and can only live with the solice in knowing the Michael Vick will have to live with himself and his memories,…gonna be tough when he grows up.

    • I think that if Nike (his former sponsor that pulled their sponsorship from Michael Vick when he broke his contract by not living up to the moral clauses in his agreement).

So it would be absolutely nuts if they did a deal with a guy that broke his contract.

Even if they were looking at him as a new endorsee of Nike products, I think it smacks of rewarding Michael Vick for killing dogs by making him the Nike spokesman to stop dog fighting, a sport that Michael Vick participated in professionally for just as long as he was a professional football player.

I still wouldn’t buy ANYTHING with his name related to it.
